The Kissing Trees

People say, “Put it out there!”, and, “Think it, dream it, believe it.”, etc.; well, five years ago when we chose the location for our engagement pictures and then wedding photos, in 2016, I had no idea (and probably would never have believed) that we would later build a homestead and raise our honey bees right next door.

The spot is located in our home community in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. It doesn’t officially carry the title ‘Kissing Trees’, but when describing the location to our photographer, Sherri Poirier of Pear Tree Photography, it seemed most fitting.

I can tend to romanticize things, nature is no exception.

The large stretch of ‘Kissing Tree’ land is used as a hay field and has otherwise been largely untouched for some decades. In the centre, stand two big apple trees that bend and touch in such a way as though they were swaying and dancing when no one was looking, and finally connected for a kiss.

Perhaps they had been caught and have since been frozen in mid lip (leaf) lock for all to see.

What I wouldn’t give to hear Anne of Green Gable’s or Stuart McClean’s take on the pair?

While at a family gathering for tea and sweets last spring, I mentioned still wanting (pining) to move home after living away for nearly ten years, that the large acre ‘Kissing Tree’ lot that’s been with the same family for generations, was our dream site. A few months later, a family member messaged me saying I’d never believe it, but a lot next door to our trees had a ‘For Sale’ sign up.

We were not exactly ready but considered this to be our opportunity to finally set the wheels in motion to move home.  Lloyd had already taken a leap by leaving his career as a Royal Canadian Mounted Police Officer and was only in his second year of law school, but, we did it anyways.

I was flicking through my camera this week looking at photos as we geared up for the website launch. I hadn’t viewed the first few photos I had taken in a while (to be fair, I have about 2000 on my memory card). Amongst the first snaps taken?

There they were. There I hope they always will be.

We’ve been learning about the history of the tree land, the farmstead that once stood on the property, the agriculture, and people.  The land is more than just the trees now but they still hold a certain sparkle and wonder, to me.

I too now believe that we all could spend a little more time, “thinking it, dreaming it, believing it”.

If you’ve got something you so desire, I would firmly encourage you to, “put it out there!”
You never know what could happen.

Thanks so much for taking the time to pop by.
Hope to see you again soon,

- Samantha
